V-아/어 줄게요. V-아/어 줄까요?

V-아/어 줄게요. V-아/어 줄까요?

In Korean, the V-아/어 줄게요. V-아/어 줄까요? forms are used to offer help, assistance, or services to someone. These patterns indicate that you are willing to do something for another person's benefit. V-아/어 줄게요 expresses your intention to help and translates to "I will do (something) for you," while V-아/어 줄까요? is used to suggest or offer help and means "shall I do (something) for you?" or "would you like me to do (something) for you?"

These expressions are the opposite of the request patterns V-아/어 주세요 and V-아/어 주시겠어요? While those patterns are used to ask for help, these patterns are used to offer help. They show your willingness to assist and demonstrate consideration for others.

These are the basic rules when conjugating verbs to V-아/어 줄게요/줄까요:

  1. Remove '다' from the end of the verb.

  2. Add 아/어/해 줄게요 or 아/어/해 줄까요.

Use –아 줄게요/줄까요 when the word stem has a last syllable that ends in 'ㅏ' or 'ㅗ'.

When the word stem ends with a final consonant (받침), add –아 줄게요/줄까요.

닫다 (to close)

  1. 닫다 -> 닫
  2. 닫 + 아 줄게요/줄까요
  3. 닫아 줄게요/줄까요

찾다 (to find)

  1. 찾다 -> 찾
  2. 찾 + 아 줄게요/줄까요
  3. 찾아 줄게요/줄까요

받다 (to receive)

  1. 받다 -> 받
  2. 받 + 아 줄게요/줄까요
  3. 받아 줄게요/줄까요
  • 문을 닫아 줄게요 (I will close the door for you.)
  • 창문을 닫아 줄까요? (Shall I close the window for you?)
  • 가방을 찾아 줄게요 (I will find your bag for you.)
  • 핸드폰을 찾아 줄까요? (Shall I find your phone for you?)

When the word stem ends with 'ㅏ' (vowel), drop 아 in '아 줄게요/줄까요'.

사다 (to buy)

  1. 사다 -> 사
  2. 사 + 아 줄게요/줄까요 (drop 아 in '아 줄게요/줄까요')
  3. 사 줄게요/줄까요

가다 (to go)

  1. 가다 -> 가
  2. 가 + 아 줄게요/줄까요 (drop 아 in '아 줄게요/줄까요')
  3. 가 줄게요/줄까요
  • 물을 사 줄게요 (I will buy water for you.)
  • 커피를 사 줄까요? (Shall I buy coffee for you?)
  • 먼저 가 줄게요 (I will go first for you.)
  • 대신 가 줄까요? (Shall I go instead for you?)

When the word stem ends with 'ㅗ'; combine 'ㅗ' with 'ㅏ', so that it becomes 'ㅘ'.

보다 (to see)

  1. 보다 -> 보
  2. 보 + 아 줄게요/줄까요 (combine 'ㅗ' with 'ㅏ' to make 'ㅘ')
  3. 보아 줄게요/줄까요 -> 봐 줄게요/줄까요

도와주다 (to help)

  1. 도와주다 -> 도와주 -> 도와 (주다 becomes 줄게요/줄까요)
  2. 도와 줄게요/줄까요
  • 제 숙제를 봐 줄게요 (I will look at your homework for you.)
  • 이 문제를 봐 줄까요? (Shall I look at this problem for you?)
  • 도와 줄게요 (I will help you.)
  • 도와 줄까요? (Shall I help you?)

Use –어 줄게요/줄까요 when the stem's vowel is neither 'ㅏ' nor 'ㅗ'.

When the word stem ends with a final consonant (받침), add '어 줄게요/줄까요'.

읽다 (to read)

  1. 읽다 -> 읽
  2. 읽 + 어 줄게요/줄까요
  3. 읽어 줄게요/줄까요

듣다 (to listen)

  1. 듣다 -> 듣 -> 들 (irregular ㄷ → ㄹ change)
  2. 들 + 어 줄게요/줄까요
  3. 들어 줄게요/줄까요

찍다 (to take a picture)

  1. 찍다 -> 찍
  2. 찍 + 어 줄게요/줄까요
  3. 찍어 줄게요/줄까요

열다 (to open)

  1. 열다 -> 열
  2. 열 + 어 줄게요/줄까요
  3. 열어 줄게요/줄까요
  • 책을 읽어 줄게요 (I will read the book for you.)
  • 동화를 읽어 줄까요? (Shall I read a fairy tale for you?)
  • 음악을 들어 줄게요 (I will listen to music for you.)
  • 고민을 들어 줄까요? (Shall I listen to your worries?)
  • 사진을 찍어 줄게요 (I will take a picture for you.)
  • 단체 사진을 찍어 줄까요? (Shall I take a group photo for you?)
  • 창문을 열어 줄게요 (I will open the window for you.)
  • 에어컨을 켜 줄까요? (Shall I turn on the air conditioner for you?)

When the word stem ends with the vowel 'ㅓ', drop '어' in '어 줄게요/줄까요'.

서다 (to stand)

  1. 서다 -> 서
  2. 서 + 어 줄게요/줄까요 (drop '어' in '어 줄게요/줄까요')
  3. 서 줄게요/줄까요
  • 대신 서 줄게요 (I will stand for you.)
  • 줄을 서 줄까요? (Shall I stand in line for you?)

When the word stem ends with vowel 'ㅣ', combine 'ㅣ' with '어', so it becomes '여'.

마시다 (to drink)

  1. 마시다 -> 마시
  2. 마시 + 어 줄게요/줄까요 (combine 'ㅣ' with '어', so it becomes '여')
  3. 마셔 줄게요/줄까요

쓰다 (to write/use)

  1. 쓰다 -> 쓰 -> ㅆ
  2. ㅆ + 어 줄게요/줄까요
  3. 써 줄게요/줄까요

부르다 (to call)

  1. 부르다 -> 부르 -> 불 (irregular 르 → ㄹㄹ change)
  2. 불 + 어 줄게요/줄까요
  3. 불러 줄게요/줄까요

보이다 (to show)

  1. 보이다 -> 보이
  2. 보이 + 어 줄게요/줄까요 (combine 'ㅣ' with '어', so it becomes '여')
  3. 보여 줄게요/줄까요
  • 편지를 써 줄게요 (I will write a letter for you.)
  • 메모를 써 줄까요? (Shall I write a memo for you?)
  • 이름을 불러 줄게요 (I will call your name for you.)

When the word stem ends with vowel 'ㅜ', combine 'ㅜ' + '어', so it becomes 'ㅝ'.

주다 (to give)

  1. 주다 -> 주
  2. 주 + 어 줄게요/줄까요 (combine 'ㅜ' with '어', so it becomes 'ㅝ')
  3. 주어 줄게요/줄까요 -> 줘 줄게요/줄까요
  • 선물을 줘 줄게요 (I will give you a gift.)

When you change '하다', it becomes '해 줄게요/줄까요', which is contracted from '하여 줄게요/줄까요'.

공부하다 (to study)

  1. 공부하다 -> 공부하
  2. 공부하 + 여 줄게요/줄까요 (change '하다' to '해 줄게요/줄까요')
  3. 공부해 줄게요/줄까요

설명하다 (to explain)

  1. 설명하다 -> 설명하

Difference Between V-아/어 줄게요 and V-아/어 줄까요

V-아/어 줄게요:

  • Expresses intention or promise to help
  • Used when you have decided to help someone
  • More definitive and assertive
  • "I will do (something) for you"

V-아/어 줄까요?:

  • Offers or suggests help
  • Used when asking if the person wants your help
  • More polite and considerate
  • "Shall I do (something) for you?" / "Would you like me to do (something) for you?"

Examples:

  • A: 수학 숙제를 못 풀겠어요. (I can't solve my math homework.)

  • B: 도와 줄게요! (I will help you!)

Using with Higher Status People: V-아/어 드릴게요/드릴까요

When offering help to someone of higher status (elders, bosses, customers), use V-아/어 드릴게요/드릴까요 instead:

  • 도와 드릴게요 (I will help you - respectful)
  • 설명해 드릴까요? (Shall I explain for you - respectful)
  • 확인해 드릴게요 (I will check for you - respectful)
  • 준비해 드릴까요? (Shall I prepare for you - respectful)

Offering Help:

  • A: 짐이 무거워 보여요. (The luggage looks heavy.)
  • B: 들어 줄까요? (Shall I carry it for you?)
  • A: 네, 감사합니다. (Yes, thank you.)

  • Use 줄게요 when you're determined to help
  • Use 줄까요 when offering options
  • Use 드릴게요/드릴까요 for people you should respect

Common irregular verbs:

  • 돕다 → 도와 줄게요/줄까요 (I will help/Shall I help)
